Robert Downey Jr.’s 1970 Boss Is the
Pinnacle of Mustang Customization
By Jerry Perez
SpeedKore hits it out of the park with this drool-worthy custom Mustang
Boss, for none other than Iron Man himself. When in character, Tony Stark
drives an Audi R8, but like most silly exotic car owners and collectors,
what they really want is a true badass machine. Cue the 1970 Ford Mustang
Boss.
Of course, when you have deep pockets like Downey Jr. you just don’t just
go on Craigslist and buy the first restomod that appeals to your pupils.
No, you commission a build that meets your extremely peculiar
specifications and desires in every possible way, such as this outrageous
Mustang built by the guys at SpeedKore.
The Wisconsin-based performance shop claims that Downey Jr. was deeply
involved throughout the entire project, and that his goal was to recreate
a true one-of-a-kind Mustang with the right touch of retro and modern. If
you ask us, we think he got it just right!
Under the hood is a Ford Performance Aluminator 5.0-liter V8, which is
already a sweet power plant of its own. But Downey Jr. didn’t want
slightly above average, so he asked SpeedKore to equip the V8 with a Stage
2 Ford Performance-Roush supercharger.
The exact horsepower figure wasn’t released, but our guess is that it’s
somewhere in the 600-650 horsepower vicinity.
The mysterious horsepower is routed through a Bowler T56 transmission
connected to a Detroit Speed Ford 9-inch rear differential. The utterly
delicious HRE wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires,
which we’re sure can catapult this bad boy with relative ease.
Of course, not everything about this Boss is badassery. Nope, even the
Iron Man needs a little touch of swank in his rides. The interior is a
bespoke combination of brown leather and plaid cloth, and it has nearly as
much carbon fiber as the outside. Speaking of the outside, the paint is
called Khaki Yellow and it was developed by PPG.
Go ahead and look at the pictures. It’s okay to drool, we promise!
