Record Price paid for 1969 Mustang Mach 1 promotional model
by Dean V. Ricci

For those that collect promotional model cars of the 60s and 70s, especially in the Ford vein; it is well known that the 1969 Mustang Mach 1 promotional model is one of the toughest to come by. Not very many of these promotional cars were produced, something like 800 units, which makes survivors extremely rare finds.

Promotional cars are 1/24th scale reproductions of actual vehicles. They are similar to model cars you would find in kits, except these cars always came fully assembled. They were wrapped in protective material and encased in a cardboard box. As is the case with the Mach 1 promotional car, are were molded in this red color shown in the photographs below.

At the close of auction on eBay, Tuesday February 5, 2008 the final price paid for this particular model was a whopping $1,990.00. I've seen prices for the somewhat rare 1967 promotional cars reach over $200 and the lower production 1971 models touch the $300 limit. To bring in money such as this car has is quite unbelieveable.

It will be interesting to see if this price point brings more of these cars out of people's collections for auction.
