Mustang Turns 30 Still in Full Gallop

The Ford Mustang celebrates its 30th birthday in much the same way it marked its introduction on April 17, 1964 -- amid much excitement across the country. With more than 6.1 Million Mustangs sold since 1964, a number of owners, former owners and Mustang enthusiasts are expected to celebrate.

Major Mustang celebrations are happening in Los Angeles, Indianapolis and Charlotte, NC.

Hundreds of vintage Mustangs will be displayed at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA. at the "Fabulous Fords Forever" rally. And a caravan of 38 Mustangs from Europe will arrive at the event following a coast-to-coast drive from Jacksonville, FL. This is the second time for the "Pony Drive" by Europeans who shipped Mustangs to the U.S. The previous trip celebrated the car's 25th Anniversary.

With a Mustang Cobra Convertible scheduled to pace the Indy 500 on May 29, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the appropriate backdrop for another Mustang party. Racing legend Parnelli Jones, the pace car driver, will put the Mustang Cobra through its paces on the famed "Brickyard" track. Once again, hundreds of vintage Mustang owners will display their cars. The 1964 and 1979 Ford Mustangs, which paced previous Indy 500's, also will be on hand on May 29th.

In December, Motor Trend magazine named the 1994 Mustang its "Car of the Year". Other tributes for the 1994 Mustang include:

  • Popular science gave the car a "Best of What's New" award.

  • Popular Mechanics gave the Mustang a "Design and Engineering" award.
